Unfortunately love, it’s very very hard to make a career out of professional horse riding unless you have the proper amount of funds behind you. It is a profession that needs a lot of time and sadly a lot of money (seeing as how horses eat money to make manure…) But, don’t despair, there is still hope.
What I would suggest is this:
1) Get a job at a local stable, even if it is just as a stable cleaner. If you work hard, proof yourself, someone will notice.
2) If you can ride but you don’t have your own horse, offer your services to other people as an ‘exercise’ rider. Warning here though (from experience) – the only horses that people aren’t willing to ride themselves are the horses that normally have some sort of problem that the owner is scared of. I’ve spend five years riding people’s problem horses exactly due to this reason.
3) Start looking into job options. My suggestions would be: a) Veterinary nursing, b) Veterinarian, c) Horse Physiotherapist, d) Farrier (if you are strong) e) Study animal science when you’re at university and then focus on Nutrition. I can’t tell you what a large field this is. With a lot of opportunities.
4) Learn. Take in every bit of information that anybody can give you and make it your own. Learn from the horses that you ride and challenge yourself.
5) Never leave the field and never, ever let anybody discourage you.
Horse chiropractors and masooses usually get paid pretty well. Also vets, obviously. Unless you are an amazing trainer, though, you probably can’t get much of a job from riding. Maybe you could ride and work other people’s horses for them in your spare time to earn a little extra cash, but it won’t be much.
